Seoul is a city where skyscrapers and traditional hanoks stand side by side, and one of the best ways to experience the city as a whole is by walking along the Seoul City Wall, formally known as Hanyangdoseong. Often overlooked in favor of the city’s famous palaces or shopping districts, not many tourists visit the structure. However, it offers one of the most fascinating ways to immerse oneself in Seoul.

Constructed during the late 14th century to protect the capital of the Joseon Dynasty, Hanyangdoseong stretches over 18.6 kilometers. The wall follows Seoul's four major mountains, Bukaksan, Naksan, Namsan, and Inwangsan, providing picturesque views of Seoul’s urban backgrounds. Its uniqueness comes from the fact that it covers the major cities in Kangbuk, the northern part of Seoul, completely, offering a full-package experience of the city.

The wall is divided into four main sections, each with its own viewpoint. For a peaceful afternoon walk, the Naksan Park segment is ideal, featuring paths for beautiful sunset views. If you’re interested in history, the Bukaksan segment passes by the Changuimun Gate and provides access to the Bugaksan Security Path, which was once closed to the public. Adventurers and nature-lovers can walk along the Inwangsan Trail, known for its dramatic rock formations and tales of ancient shamanic rituals.

However, walking the Seoul City Wall isn’t just about the scenery. It’s also a chance to explore Korean heritage. Each gate of the wall, like Sungnyemun (Namdaemun) or Heunginjimun (Dongdaemun), delves into the history of the nation’s defense and royal authority. Along the trail, you’ll encounter interpretive signs, small museums, and exhibits describing the wall’s restoration and historical significance.

What makes Hanyangdoseong special is its ability to display both the old and new. Imagine that you’re standing on a centuries-old stone wall, gazing at the urban streets of Dongdaemun Design Plaza just below. It’s a reminder of how Korea developed itself in such a short span of time while preserving its historical identity.

Whether you're planning a quick visit or a longer trip, Seoul City Wall should not be missed.
