As the snow from winter melts and the chilly breeze gives way to warm sunlight, a new season begins. Spring, the beautiful season of flowers, sunshine, and birth, blesses the land and paints our lives with colors and love. Korea, a country with distinct seasons, also bursts into life, with breathtaking landscapes and vibrant traditions welcoming the new season. During 입춘 (Ipchun), the Korean term for the start of spring, grasses bloom with flowers, streams race along mountain valleys, and people open their doors to feel the warm sunlight dancing on their skin. Among the many places that capture the essence of spring, Gwangyang Maehwa Village stands out as a unique destination. Maehwa, or plum blossoms, are one of the flowers that symbolize spring in Korea, engulfing the season with marvelous beauty. Gwangyang Maehwa Village, located in Jeollanam-do, floods with white and pink plum blossoms every February and March, making it the perfect place to start your spring.
Gwangyang Maehwa Village, also called Seomjin Village, has a rich history deeply connected to its plum trees. The village began cultivating plum trees decades ago, with the fertile land and mild climate providing ideal conditions for their growth. These trees are believed to have protected the village, notably during the Japanese Invasion of Korea (Imjin War) in 1592, when General Yi Sun-shin ambushed the navy and successfully attacked the Japanese military. Over time, the beautiful blooming season of the plum trees became a celebrated festival, attracting visitors from across Korea and beyond. Home to plum trees as old as 250 years, the village is not only a symbol of natural beauty but also a hub for Korean plum agriculture, producing some of the best maesil (plum) products, including maesil cheong (plum syrup) and maesil jangajji (pickled plums).

The annual Gwangyang International Maehwa Festival, held in late February or early March when the plum blossoms are in full bloom, is the highlight of the season. More than one million tourists visit the village each year to admire the 33-square-meter plum cluster, with thousands of flowers blooming and their charming petals creating a breathtaking scene over the Seomjin River. However, the festival offers more than just stunning views. Diverse cultural celebrations enhance the experience, including an overnight plum farm party, hands-on activities like making plum syrup or tasting fresh plum wine, barefoot walking on the Seomjin River, creating plum blossom handkerchiefs, and exploring local food markets. Efforts have been made to improve the festival experience as well like car-free streets for safety and the return of full festival gift certificates to enhance joy and pleasure for visitors.
Unlike cherry blossoms, which commonly dominate many spring celebrations, the plum blossoms of Gwangyang Maehwa Village offer a unique beauty. Their earlier blooming period signals the very start of spring, symbolizing new beginnings. Additionally, the village’s rural setting, featuring traditional hanok houses and winding paths, provides an escape from tiring urban life and immerses visitors in the warmth and beauty of spring. The blend of natural charm and cultural heritage makes Gwangyang Maehwa Village an exceptional and enriching place to feel the season.

Gwangyang Maehwa Village invites you to embrace the renewal, charm, and prosperity that spring represents in Korean culture. With modern tourist features such as photo spots for social media and cafes serving creative plum-inspired desserts and beverages, the tradition of Maehwa Village continues to thrive through new generations, blending Korea’s agricultural history with its vibrant contemporary culture. Easily accessible by taking a KTX train to Suncheon Station followed by a local bus or taxi, the village is also near other recommended destinations to spend your spring, such as Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve or Hadong’s tea fields.
Make Gwangyang Maehwa Village your first stop this season, and let the blessings of Gwangyang’s plum blossoms be the start of the beautiful season of flowers, sunshine, and birth.
