One of the most important holidays in Korea, Chuseok, has long been a time for harvest celebrations, family get-togethers, and ancestral worship. Despite its original meaning, Chuseok has changed with the times and is now a holiday known for its surge in both domestic and foreign travel.

Traditionally, Chuseok was a time to gather with family members and perform ancestral rites called charye as a way of honoring one’s ancestors. Families would travel back to their hometowns, which were mostly in rural areas. There was very little travel except for those returning home, as the emphasis was on tracing one’s heritage, returning home, and reestablishing relationships with family.

However, as urbanization and Korea’s economy bloomed, the masses moved to the cities in search of employment. Chuseok turned into a chance to visit rural hometowns, initiating  a wave of travel. Travel became easier with the advent of transportation networks, such as domestic flights and high-speed trains, enabling people to spend the holiday visiting farther-flung places.

These days, a lot of Koreans use Chuseok as an excuse to depart from their city lives and visit rural areas or well-liked tourist destinations like Gangwon province and Jeju island. This holiday provides the perfect occasion for travelers to take advantage of traditional festivals, temple visits, and cultural events in Korea’s more sedate areas. This trend has led to the growth of domestic travel, which combines leisure with cultural immersion, during Chuseok.

Extended vacation days for Chuseok have also increased Koreans’ overseas travel. Nowadays, a lot of people visit neighboring tour destinations such as China, Japan, and other countries in Southeast Asia. Travel agencies and hotels around the world have responded to this by creating Chuseok specific packages aimed towards Korean tourists.

The domestic and international tourism sectors have adjusted as Chuseok has become more of a travel-oriented holiday. Special events are held in both urban and rural locations, and travel agencies provide packages that combine traditional contemporary experiences. Tourists visiting Korea during Chuseok can enjoy a quieter urban atmosphere or take part in cultural festivities like folk games, temple visits, and performances in rural regions.

From being a family-oriented holiday, Chuseok has evolved to a celebration for domestic and international travel. This change presents exceptional chances for visitors to take in the leisure aspects of contemporary Chuseok while experiencing the finest of Korean cultural customs. Traveling within Korea or enjoying the celebrations of the season, Chuseok offers an intriguing fusion of modernity and tradition for all guests.
