An Jung-geun: A Revolutionary Figure in Korea’s History

Every March 1st, South Korea celebrates the Independence Movement Day (삼일절, Samiljeol) to commemorate the nationwide protest against Japanese colonial rule that began in 1919. Remembering independence activists is a crucial part of this day, since they have dedicated their lives for Korea's independence. Among them, An Jung-geun is recognized not just for his brave act of resistance, but also for his optimistic beliefs about peace and national power.
An Jung-geun (1879-1910) was a significant figure in Korea’s independence movement, widely known for assassinating Ito Hirobumi at Harbin Station in 1909. Ito was the former Japanese Resident-General, and was a vital figure in Japan's colonization of Korea. Hence, he became a main target for independence activists. After An Jung-geun assassinated Ito in Harbin Station, he was shortly executed by the Japanese in 1910. However, his final writings and unshakable patriotism secured its place in history. An Jung-geun's influence on Korea's independence is significant, since the assasination's goal was to draw international attention to Korea's situation under Japanese control.
For individuals interested in his legacy, various locations in Korea commemorate his achievements. Namely, the An Jung-geun Memorial Hall honors his life, beliefs, and independence movements through various displays. The memorial hall has 12 display halls and galleries, an auditorium, a reference library, and a rest space. Furthermore, the memorial hall holds the An Jung-guen Academy and other activities every year, along with exhibitions of his life and some of his calligraphy. Events include calligraphy competitions and tours of historic locations worldwide that were significant to independence movements. The An Jung-geun Memorial Hall is free to enter.
An Jung-geun's legacy goes beyond the assassination of Ito Hirobumi. For example, while in prison, he wrote extensive writings about peace and East Asian unity. Furthermore, his belief in education as an opportunity for empowerment is still relevant today for South Koreans. For tourists visiting South Korea, exploring the An Jung-geun memorial hall will provide a meaningful chance to connect with Korea's history while understanding the sacrifices made to achieve independence.
